Flock Tightens Police Surveillance Rules Amid Growing Privacy Concerns

Flock Safety is introducing tougher oversight measures for police agencies using its automated license plate reader network, following growing concerns over surveillance and alleged misuse, according to CNN.

The company is reducing its standard data retention period from 30 days to seven days, although local agencies can set different limits under state or local rules. A new evidence mode will allow case-related information to be preserved longer.

Flock is also giving jurisdictions more control over searches by outside agencies, including the ability to restrict searches for specific purposes. The report said the changes follow cases involving officers accused of improperly using the technology to track romantic partners or others.
