Florida Declares Emergency As Isaias Threatens Gulf Coast

Tropical Storm Isaias is expected to rapidly strengthen into a dangerous hurricane before reaching the northern Gulf Coast by the weekend, according to CNN meteorologists.

The storm currently has sustained winds of 40 mph and is about 600 miles south of southeastern Louisiana. Forecasters expect Isaias to move east over Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula before turning toward the Gulf Coast. It could reach Category 2 strength, with winds near 110 mph, by Thursday night or early Friday.

Oil companies are also securing offshore operations. Shell and BP are evacuating nonessential personnel from Gulf facilities ahead of the storm.
