For First Time This Century, Democrats Don’t Challenge GOP President’s Electoral Votes

Democrats did not object to the electoral college count of a Republican president for the first time in the 21st century, making Donald Trump the official winner of the 2024 presidential election.

Vice President Kamala Harris certified Trump’s electoral vote win in a joint session of Congress. The vote was 312 to 226. There were zero objections to any state’s slate of electors during Monday’s Electoral College certification.

Before Monday, Democrats have objected to the election of every Republican president since 2001. Democrats tried to block Bush’s electoral vote in 2001. In 2005, a Democrat tried to challenge the electoral vote count in Congress. In 2017, House Democrats tried to object to electoral votes from multiple states, with then Vice President Joe Biden certifying the election.

In 2001, Democratic California Rep. Maxine Watters tried to challenge the results but she was denied by then Vice President Al Gore.

Ahead of the certification, Harris released a video saying she would perform her “constitutional duty” as Vice President to certify the results of the 2024 election.

“Today, I will perform my constitutional duty as Vice President to certify the results of the 2024 election. This duty is a sacred obligation — one I will uphold guided by love of country, loyalty to our Constitution, and unwavering faith in the American people,” Harris said.

The next step is Trump’s inauguration on January 20.
