Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert Dies At 84

In 2016, Hastert was sentenced to 15 months in prison and fined $250,000 for violating banking laws.

Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert has died at age 84. Kendall County Coroner Jacquie Purcell confirmed Monday that Hastert died at his home over the weekend from natural causes.

The Illinois Republican entered Congress in 1986 and served as House speaker from January 1999 to January 2007, becoming the longest-serving Republican to hold the position. He succeeded Newt Gingrich and was followed by Nancy Pelosi.

Hastert’s political legacy was later overshadowed by revelations that he paid $3.5 million to conceal sexual abuse of students dating to his time as a high school coach. Prosecutors alleged he abused at least four teenagers.

In 2016, Hastert was sentenced to 15 months in prison and fined $250,000 for violating banking laws. He served 13 months before his 2017 release. Hastert is survived by his wife, Jean, and sons Joshua and Ethan.
