Former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax fatally shot his wife, Dr. Cerina Fairfax, before taking his own life, police said Thursday.
According to Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis, the couple was found dead at their home after their teenage son called 911 shortly after midnight. Authorities said the incident followed an ongoing domestic dispute linked to divorce proceedings.

Police had previously responded to the home in January after Fairfax accused his wife of assault. Officials later determined the claim was unfounded after reviewing video evidence.
Fairfax, once the second-highest-ranking official in Virginia, had a long political career and was elected lieutenant governor in 2017. He later faced sexual assault allegations dating back to 2000 and 2004, which he denied, calling them a coordinated attack.
According to police, the case underscores a volatile domestic situation that escalated into a fatal outcome.
