France will deploy military personnel to support police ahead of another expected wave of protests this weekend, as authorities attempt to restore order following widespread riots, looting and property damage.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez told lawmakers that troops from the Sentinelle operation would handle static security duties, allowing police and gendarmes to focus on enforcement. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu promised a substantial security presence and said local authorities could impose additional curfews.

The unrest followed demonstrations over living costs, education and deteriorating public services. Businesses reported extensive damage, with more than 3,000 shops reportedly looted or vandalised, according to MEDEF vice president Fabrice Le Saché. The government plans to establish financial support for affected businesses and accelerate insurance assessments.

President Emmanuel Macron has also faced criticism for travelling to the Middle East during the crisis. Meanwhile, France’s political divisions, rising borrowing costs and contentious budget negotiations are adding pressure on the government as it confronts continuing public discontent.
