French Police Hunt Thieves After Renoir Museum Break-In

The suspects reportedly cut through a fence, entered through the gardens and used an electric saw to remove Renoir paintings from their fixtures.

Four paintings by French artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir were stolen from the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer early Tuesday, with two later recovered after thieves dropped them while escaping, according to CNN.

Cagnes-sur-Mer Mayor Bryan Masson said police reached the museum within five minutes after its alarm sounded at 5:48 a.m. The suspects reportedly cut through a fence, entered through the gardens and used an electric saw to remove Renoir paintings from their fixtures.

The thieves reached the museum’s ground floor, where 12 artworks were stored, before fleeing. The museum has been closed indefinitely as authorities investigate.

Masson called the break-in a serious attack on the city’s cultural heritage and urged stronger security at French museums.

The report said the incident follows a major Louvre robbery last year. Europol has warned that art criminals are increasingly using aggressive tactics and targeting valuable cultural artifacts, precious metals and gemstones because of strong demand and opportunities for illicit resale.
