The United Kingdom is expected to announce sanctions targeting Israeli settlements in the West Bank, marking a major shift in relations with Israel, according to CNN.
Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said the measures are intended to protect the prospects for a two-state solution. The move comes as Israel advances the E1 settlement project, which critics say could divide the West Bank and undermine the possibility of a contiguous Palestinian state.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog called sanctions a serious mistake and urged dialogue instead. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar has warned that Israel would respond if Britain imposes penalties.
The expected British action could also draw a response from the Trump administration. US Ambassador Mike Huckabee warned that American reaction could have a major impact on British businesses.
The dispute comes amid growing international criticism of settlement expansion and increased settler violence against Palestinians.
