French authorities have escalated their investigation into Elon Musk and the social media platform X into a criminal probe, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office.
The investigation centers on allegations that X manipulated algorithms to influence French politics and allowed users of the AI chatbot Grok to spread Holocaust denial content and explicit deepfake images. The report said the probe was initially requested by French lawmaker Éric Bothorel earlier this year.

French prosecutors said Musk and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino were summoned for questioning in April but declined to appear. Musk previously described the investigation as a “political attack” after French authorities raided X’s Paris office in February.
According to reports, investigations into X and Grok are also underway in other countries and in California. The probes are examining whether Musk’s companies knowingly enabled the spread of harmful deepfake material and other illegal content online.
