The family of an American Ebola patient being treated in Germany has been admitted to an isolation ward in Berlin as a precaution, according to Reuters and the German health ministry.

Officials said the patient’s wife and four children were flown to Germany on a special flight after being identified as close contacts. The ministry did not confirm whether any family members had tested positive or developed symptoms.

The patient, identified by missionary organization Serge as Dr. Peter Stafford, reportedly contracted Ebola while treating patients in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where a rare outbreak has killed more than 130 people.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Stafford remains in stable condition at Berlin’s Charite hospital. The White House said Germany was chosen for treatment because it is geographically closer to Congo than the United States, denying reports that Washington blocked his return home.
