Google Reshuffles AI Leadership As Jeff Dean Departs

Google has announced a major restructuring of its artificial intelligence leadership, with chief scientist Jeff Dean leaving the company after 27 years, according to a memo from CEO Sundar Pichai posted on Google's blog.

The report said Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, will become chairman of DeepMind while also taking on the role of Alphabet's chief scientist. Meanwhile, DeepMind technology chief Koray Kavukcuoglu will lead Google's AI division and oversee development of the upcoming Gemini 4 model.

The leadership changes come as Google intensifies competition with OpenAI and Anthropic while investing heavily in AI infrastructure. Alphabet shares fell about 4% following the announcement, the report said.
