The Senate Homeland Security Committee voted 8-5 on Thursday to hold Dr. Anthony Fauci in contempt of Congress after he repeatedly invoked his Fifth Amendment right during testimony on the origins of COVID-19, reported by CBS News.

Committee Chairman Sen. Rand Paul argued that Fauci improperly refused to answer questions despite receiving a Biden-era pardon, which Paul said may remove his protection against self-incrimination. Fauci's attorney, however, maintained that his client had valid legal grounds to invoke the Fifth Amendment.

According to CBS News, Paul plans to bypass a full Senate vote and instead send the committee's contempt resolution directly to the Justice Department as a referral. The final decision on whether to pursue charges would rest with the Justice Department.

Democrats unanimously opposed the measure, with Sen. Gary Peters warning that using criminal contempt in this case could weaken future congressional oversight. The report said Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment 111 times during last week's subpoenaed testimony before the committee.
