House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries is defending a private meeting with Jared Kushner after facing criticism from some Democrats and Trump critics.
According to CNN, Jeffries met with President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and former adviser in New York to discuss potential cooperation on immigration, housing and the cost of living. Jeffries said Kushner requested the meeting and that he used it to address what he called a genuine affordability crisis.
Several prominent Democrats, however, backed Jeffries. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed support for the Democratic leader.
Jeffries remains a leading opponent of Trump and has not ruled out impeachment if Democrats regain control of the House.
The two men previously worked together on the bipartisan First Step Act, signed into law in 2018.
