Harvard Wins Extension In Court Over International Student Ban

A federal judge in Boston has extended a court order blocking President Donald Trump’s plan to bar foreign nationals from entering the U.S. to study at Harvard University.

U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs said Tuesday she would prolong the temporary restraining order until June 23 while she considers whether to issue a preliminary injunction. The order had been set to expire Thursday.

Harvard, represented by attorney Ian Gershengorn, argued that Trump’s proclamation violated the First Amendment and was a retaliatory move against the university for resisting federal attempts to influence its governance and academic direction.

The original restraining order was issued June 6, one day after Trump signed the proclamation targeting international student access.

Burroughs did not commit to a timeline for her final ruling but said, “We’ll kick out an opinion as soon as we can.”

In an 8-1 ruling issued on Thursday, Justice Clarence Thomas found that Havana Docks “did not have to prove that the cruise lines interfered with a property interest that would have existed in the counterfactual scenario in which the Cuban government did not confiscate it.”
