Head Start Programs Shut Down As Funding Dries Up During Shutdown

The federal government shutdown has begun to take a toll on low-income families as funding for Head Start programs runs out. Nearly 140 programs serving 65,000 children nationwide will lose federal support beginning Nov. 1, according to the National Head Start Association.

In Wisconsin, several early learning centers have already closed, forcing teachers to lay off and parents to scramble for child care.

The closures come as SNAP food benefits are also set to expire this weekend, compounding hardship for families who rely on both programs. Local organizers warn hunger could “go up 100%.”

The Senate left Washington for the weekend after more than a dozen failed votes to end the impasse, ensuring the shutdown will stretch past Monday.

President Trump urged Senate Republicans to “play their TRUMP CARD” and eliminate the filibuster, which would allow a simple majority to reopen the government without Democratic votes.
