Hegseth Plans 20% Cut In General And Admiral Positions At Pentagon

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has approved plans to reduce by 20% the number of military positions designated for generals and admirals as part of a broader Pentagon restructuring, according to reports.

The Army, Navy, Air Force and joint military organizations have been directed to complete the changes by January 1, 2027. The plan targets senior officer billets rather than necessarily removing officers who currently hold general or admiral ranks.

Some positions could instead be downgraded to lower-ranking roles, including colonel or Navy captain positions. The restructuring expands an earlier reduction target and is intended to alter the Pentagon’s senior leadership structure.

Hegseth has said the initiative is aimed at reducing bureaucracy and improving military readiness. He has also characterized the changes as an organizational restructuring rather than a measure intended to punish individual senior officers.

The plans are expected to affect how senior military positions are distributed across the armed services and joint commands.
