Houthis Capture Yemen’s Mocha Port, Raising Red Sea Shipping Fears

Iran-backed Houthi rebels have captured the strategic Yemeni port town of Mocha, raising concerns over their growing influence near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, according to CNN.

The capture follows weeks of fighting between the Houthis and Saudi-backed forces amid a broader escalation between Iran and the United States. The Houthis had intensified their campaign to seize Mocha, including rocket attacks on the port, according to local officials cited by CNN.

Experts warned that further Houthi gains could threaten access to Bab al-Mandeb and complicate international efforts to keep shipping lanes open. The development could also put additional pressure on oil markets and worsen Yemen’s humanitarian crisis.

Houthi officials said their advances do not threaten international shipping.
