Asian students are continuing to outperform their Western peers in reading, science and mathematics, while US scores have suffered another decline, according to the 2025 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) cited by CNN.
Students from Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Macao ranked among the strongest performers, while test results from China’s Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions also placed near the top. US reading performance fell close to a 25-year low, the report said.
Andreas Schleicher of the OECD warned that students are increasingly struggling with critical thinking, evaluating information and connecting material from multiple sources.
The report also highlighted digital distraction. Fewer than 10% of students in China, Japan and South Korea said classmates were distracted by devices during science lessons, compared with a global average of 28%.
China’s results remain limited to four relatively wealthy regions.
