The U.S. officials have exposed an alleged Chinese cyber-espionage campaign that targeted federal agencies, military networks and critical infrastructure, according to CNN and the Justice Department.
The report said hackers linked to Chinese military and intelligence services allegedly exploited a Chinese technology company to conceal their activity and gain access to targeted networks.
Victims reportedly included NASA, the Federal Reserve, the Justice and Energy departments, the U.S. Senate, hospitals, power companies and defense contractors.
Officials said the full extent of the damage remains unclear, with sensitive counterintelligence assessments likely to remain classified.
According to the report, the allegations add to years of tensions over Chinese cyber activity against U.S. infrastructure.
China has routinely denied American hacking accusations and has countered that U.S. intelligence agencies conduct cyberattacks of their own. CNN said it sought comment from the Chinese Embassy in Washington.
