China’s new medium-lift transport aircraft, known as the Y-30, is being promoted as superior to the U.S. C-130J Super Hercules in multiple areas, according to a Chinese military magazine cited in reports. The aircraft completed its first test flight in December and is being developed by a state-owned aviation firm.

The Y-30 is designed to exceed its American counterpart in engine power, payload capacity and advanced systems. Analysts cited in the publication said it could transport entire combat units, helicopters and missile components, enhancing China’s rapid deployment capabilities.

The aircraft is intended to complement China’s heavier Y-20 transport by enabling faster, point-to-point operations across key regions. It could support missions in areas such as the South China Sea and beyond.

The development highlights China’s push to strengthen military logistics and project power more efficiently across contested zones.
