How Was A US Citizen Rescued From Antarctica In Winter

An American expeditioner was safely evacuated from Antarctica during a rare mid-winter medical rescue carried out by an Australian aviation team under extreme weather conditions, reported by CNN.

According to Skytraders, the Australian airline specializing in Antarctic flights, the mission began after an urgent evacuation request from the U.S. McMurdo research station on July 28. An initial attempt was delayed by severe weather before the rescue aircraft departed Australia on July 31.

The Airbus A319 landed in complete darkness and temperatures of minus 43 degrees Celsius before transferring the patient and flying to Christchurch, New Zealand, where medical treatment was provided. The airline said the patient is recovering well but released no further details.

Captain Al Wallach described the operation as one of the most demanding missions due to harsh winter conditions.

Co-pilot Louise Robertson said the crew prepared for multiple emergency scenarios, including landing without runway lighting, highlighting the importance of international coordination and detailed planning throughout the rescue.
