Iran has sharply criticized Canada for supporting US-led efforts related to the Strait of Hormuz, accusing Ottawa of yielding to pressure from Washington, according to Reuters.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Canada could not claim to support peace, freedom of navigation and international law while backing what Tehran described as US military actions in the region.
The dispute comes as Canada and the US face their own worsening trade tensions. Talks collapsed last month, followed by new tariffs on billions of dollars in goods.
Iran has issued similar warnings to other US partners. Baghaei cautioned South Korea against military involvement in the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, US lawmakers have criticized President Donald Trump’s Iran policy. Rep. Jason Crow called the conflict a “quagmire,” while Sen. Mark Warner questioned its costs and strategy.
