A luxury residential cruise ship that had circumnavigated the globe continuously for more than two years has suspended operations in Cambodia, citing soaring fuel costs linked to the Iran war.
Florida-based Villa Vie Residences said Tuesday it was arranging temporary accommodation for residents after higher fuel expenses made continued operations financially unsustainable.
The Villa Vie Odyssey departed Belfast, Northern Ireland, more than two years ago. Residents could purchase permanent cabins for $119,999 or pay monthly fees for accommodation and onboard services.
Passengers reportedly received less than a day's notice to disembark. One resident, Holly Hennessy, told CNN that the company had previously requested a fuel surcharge and reduced cooling to conserve energy.
Villa Vie is pursuing restructuring and recapitalization, but its future remains uncertain.
