James Webb Telescope Captures Cosmic 'Treasure Chest' Of Young Stars

Webb's infrared capabilities allowed scientists to observe through dust that blocks visible light, revealing stars and structures previously hidden from view.

The James Webb Space Telescope has captured a striking star-forming region in the Carina Nebula that resembles a wooden chest with an open lid.

According to the European Space Agency, the feature contains about 70 young stars and offers astronomers a detailed view of how stars form inside dense clouds of gas and dust.

The report said the cluster is about 1.3 million years old and includes a rare O-type star estimated to have around 19 times the mass of the Sun. Astronomers classify the formation as a cometary globule.

Nearby Trumpler 16 and the powerful Eta Carinae system are also influencing the region through intense radiation and stellar winds.

As the young stars evolve, their radiation and winds will gradually disperse the surrounding cloud. Scientists say studying this process could provide valuable insights into how stars gather material and shape future stellar systems.
