Texas Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton privately attributed difficulties in his campaign to the Iran war, high fuel costs and broader affordability concerns, according to audio obtained by Axios.
Speaking at a closed-door fundraiser, Paxton said gasoline and diesel prices were hurting voters and contributing to higher food and other household costs. He described affordability as his campaign’s biggest challenge and acknowledged that he has little control over the war or fuel prices.
The Paxton campaign dismissed the remarks as unsurprising, saying Texans are struggling with high prices and arguing that President Donald Trump is working to reduce costs.
Paxton is running against Democratic state Rep. James Talarico after defeating Sen. John Cornyn in the Republican primary runoff. According to Axios, recent polls have generally shown Talarico narrowly ahead.
