Kennedy Center Board Votes To Close Venue For Renovations

The Kennedy Center's board voted Tuesday to immediately close its main building for renovations, citing serious financial and structural concerns.

The decision came hours after U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper blocked another effort to place President Donald Trump's name on the building and rename its grounds without congressional approval.

The board has argued that the performing arts center faces severe financial pressure and deteriorating infrastructure, while federal officials have warned that extensive repairs are needed.

A previous renovation plan called for roughly two years of closure, with work covering structural systems, heating and cooling, electrical equipment, plumbing, elevators and fire safety.

Judge Cooper ruled that the board cannot install a Trump memorial or rename the campus without Congress's authorization. The ruling followed a lawsuit by Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty.

The closure and the naming dispute are expected to remain tied up in ongoing legal proceedings as the center moves toward renovations.
