Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem had her purse stolen Sunday night while dining at a Washington, D.C. restaurant, law enforcement sources confirmed. The bag reportedly contained around $3,000 in cash, which Noem had withdrawn for Easter gifts and a family dinner, according to a DHS spokesperson.
Also inside were her passport, driver’s license, keys, makeup, blank checks, and medication. Surveillance footage reviewed by the U.S. Secret Service shows an unidentified white male wearing a medical mask taking the bag, CNN reported.
Noem briefly addressed the incident Monday morning during the White House Easter Egg Roll, telling NBC News the matter is “not resolved yet” and that she hasn’t spoken with the Secret Service directly. The agency confirmed it is still gathering details. The theft adds to concerns about rising crime in the nation’s capital, especially as it involves a top government official under federal protection.
