Lake Mead Falls To Lowest Level Since Its Creation

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for the region through Saturday evening, with high temperatures expected to increase evaporation and place additional pressure on water supplies.

Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States, has fallen to its lowest level since it was created nearly 90 years ago.

According to officials, the reservoir dropped to an elevation of 1,040.5 feet on Thursday, surpassing the previous record low recorded in July 2022.

The report said prolonged drought, extreme summer heat, and rising water demand have accelerated the decline.

The Colorado River system supplies water to about 40 million people, while agriculture accounts for roughly 70 percent of its use. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum is leading negotiations on a new 10-year operating framework that could require significant water-use reductions across the Basin States.

Officials say Lake Mead is expected to decline further unless hydrologic conditions improve.
