Researchers at Stanford University have used artificial intelligence to design fully functional bacteriophages that do not exist in nature, marking what the study describes as the first successful creation of complete, viable viral genomes through generative AI.
According to the researchers, the viruses are capable of replicating and infecting bacteria but do not pose a threat to humans.
The team trained AI models on genetic data and generated hundreds of potential DNA sequences based on the X174 bacteriophage.
The report said 302 designs were synthesized, and 16 of the 285 tested proved fully viable. Several outperformed the original virus in destroying bacteria.
However, the researchers argued the technology could significantly advance medicine, while other scientists described the achievement as a major milestone for synthetic biology.
