Letitia James Pleads Not Guilty In Trump-Backed Fraud Case

New York Attorney General Letitia James

New York Attorney General Letitia James pleaded not guilty Friday to federal charges of bank fraud and making false statements in a mortgage case that originated from a Trump administration-led investigation.

Prosecutors allege that in 2020, James misrepresented her intent to live in a Norfolk, Virginia, property to secure a lower mortgage rate, saving nearly $19,000 over the life of the loan, according to the Department of Justice.

The case stems from a criminal referral by Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte, a close ally of President Donald Trump.

Initial investigators declined to pursue charges, citing insufficient evidence, but several were later dismissed after Trump publicly urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to act.

Lindsey Halligan, a former White House aide appointed to replace the lead U.S. attorney, secured indictments against both James and former FBI Director James Comey. James has vowed to fight what she calls a politically motivated case.
