Luigi Mangione Faces Life Sentence After Federal Guilty Plea

Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty Friday in Manhattan federal court to a charge involving stalking that led to the December 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

According to the report, Mangione could face a maximum sentence of life in prison when he is sentenced. His federal plea comes just weeks before jury selection is expected to begin in his separate New York state case, where he faces a murder charge in Thompson’s shooting.

Mangione’s attorneys are expected to argue that the federal guilty plea prevents a second prosecution under New York’s double jeopardy protections. Those rules generally prohibit trying someone twice for the same conduct.

However, Manhattan prosecutors could argue that the state murder case involves different conduct from the federal charges and therefore remains legally valid.

The report said prosecutors, Thompson’s family and UnitedHealthcare executives attended Friday’s hearing.

Mangione had previously invoked double jeopardy during a February court appearance, suggesting his defense has been preparing the argument for months.
