Trump Seeks Supreme Court Approval To Continue Ballroom Construction

The $400 million project is being built at the former East Wing site, which was demolished last year.

President Donald Trump has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to allow construction of his planned White House ballroom to continue after a federal appeals court ordered the project halted.

According to the administration’s filing Friday, officials want the Supreme Court to immediately suspend an injunction that is scheduled to take effect August 21. The $400 million project is being built at the former East Wing site, which was demolished last year.

The report said the Trump administration is framing the project as a national security matter. Solicitor General D. John Sauer argued that the planned facility is part of an integrated military complex and includes a secure ballroom and a proposed rooftop “drone port.”

The administration also warned that allowing the injunction to stand could give one federal judge broad authority over construction deemed necessary to protect the president, his family, staff and visiting foreign officials.

The Supreme Court must now decide whether construction can proceed while the broader legal dispute continues.
