Macron Heads To China As Europe Pressures Beijing On Russia

French President Emmanuel Macron will travel to China from December 3 for a three-day state visit that includes meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing and Chengdu, the Élysée Palace announced Wednesday.

Paris says the talks will focus on strengthening the France-China strategic partnership, addressing global challenges and navigating rising geopolitical tensions.

The trip comes as Europe reacts to President Donald Trump’s proposed Ukraine peace plan and grows more alarmed about Beijing’s support for Russia’s war effort.

French officials say they want China to use its influence to push Moscow toward a settlement that respects Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Trade friction will also loom large. Paris is leading a tougher European stance on Chinese imports, including new tariffs on EVs and steel.

China recently targeted French cognac in retaliation, though both sides reached a compromise.

Despite tensions, France views China as a key diplomatic partner and may invite Xi to the 2026 G7 summit it will host.
