French President Emmanuel Macron has criticised foreign leaders for making what he called “stupid comments” about France’s unrest, rejecting claims by US President Donald Trump that migrants are driving the violence.

Trump alleged, without presenting evidence, that migrants, jihadists and left-wing groups were responsible for the turmoil. Vice President JD Vance also blamed Western immigration policies, while Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar cited the unrest in defending strict migration controls.

The protests began in September over education and living costs but escalated into widespread disorder. French authorities arrested more than 2,000 people over the latest weekend of violence and have imposed local curfews while preparing a major security deployment for further demonstrations.

Macron said there was no visible evidence of foreign interference in the events themselves, but accused overseas figures of spreading manipulated information about the crisis. He urged leaders to avoid repeating unsubstantiated claims and said France wanted order, respect and progress as officials work to contain the unrest.
