New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a comprehensive review of NYPD use-of-force policies on Monday, alongside new accountability measures following criticism over the handling of disciplinary proceedings in the 2024 fatal shooting of 19-year-old Win Rozario.

Officer Salvatore Alongi avoided a disciplinary trial after the NYPD failed to notify the Civilian Complaint Review Board of his pension application. The department’s commissioner, Jessica Tisch, apologized for what she described as “human error” in the notification process.

The reforms include an additional $2.6 million for the NYPD Office of the Inspector General, increasing its staffing from 11 employees to more than three times its current size. New notification procedures are also intended to help ensure disciplinary cases are completed before officers retire.

Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry criticized the announcement, arguing it was intended to satisfy the mayor’s political supporters.

The review will continue over the coming months and include community engagement as Mamdani faces calls to deliver on his policing reform promises.
