Anthony Kazmierczak was sentenced to 14 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to assaulting Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar with vinegar during a Minneapolis town hall meeting.
Witnesses said Kazmierczak sprayed liquid from a syringe at Omar during a period of heightened tensions in the Twin Cities linked to a major immigration enforcement operation.
Kazmierczak later apologized to Omar in a message, writing that he was sorry if he had frightened her, while telling U.S. District Judge Joan N. Ericksen that his memory of the incident was “fuzzy.”
Omar, a Minnesota Democrat and former refugee from Somalia, has been the subject of repeated criticism and anti-immigration rhetoric from President Donald Trump.
The sentence follows Kazmierczak’s plea agreement and brings the criminal case over the town hall attack to a conclusion.
