A U.S. Marine Corps F-35B fighter jet crashed Friday morning at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar near San Diego, according to military officials.
The pilot safely ejected from the aircraft and was recovered, while the crash sparked a fire near the base.
The report said the aircraft was assigned to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Aircraft Group 11. Officials classified the incident as a Class A mishap, a designation used for accidents involving equipment damage exceeding $2.5 million.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The incident follows several recent military aviation accidents in the United States, including the June crash of an Air Force B-52 Stratofortress at Edwards Air Force Base.
