Marvell Technology has agreed to acquire optical components manufacturer Lumentum in a deal valued at $115 billion, strengthening its position in the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure market.

Announced on Monday, the acquisition reflects Marvell's confidence that technology companies will continue investing heavily in AI data centres. Lumentum makes optical components that enable high-speed data transmission between chips and servers.

The deal could also help Marvell compete more effectively with Broadcom, a major supplier of custom AI processors and data centre hardware. Marvell has expanded its business through partnerships with Amazon and Google, including a potential $120 billion chip supply agreement with Google through fiscal 2033.

The company has also strengthened its photonics portfolio through acquisitions, including its $3.5 billion purchase of Celestial AI in February.

Nvidia invested $2 billion each in Marvell and Lumentum earlier this year. The acquisition is Marvell's largest since its $10 billion Inphi purchase in 2021.
