A localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine took effect in the occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky early Tuesday, following mediation involving US First Lady Melania Trump, officials from both countries confirmed.
Ukrainian authorities estimate that around 1,700 people remain there. The ceasefire’s duration has not been disclosed.
Melania Trump said civilian representatives would assess residents’ needs and coordinate transportation for those wishing to leave. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged that negotiations had been underway for some time, while the Kremlin credited the first lady’s contribution.
Fighting continued elsewhere. Ukrainian authorities reported a deadly attack on Kyiv, while Russia claimed to have struck Ukrainian military and transport infrastructure.
