Elon Musk has pledged to give every American child a share in SpaceX next year, potentially creating a giveaway worth $10.7 billion, according to CNN. However, he has not explained how the shares would be distributed or established eligibility requirements.

SpaceX shares closed at approximately $146 on Friday. With around 73 million Americans under 18, the proposal could represent a significant transfer of company ownership if implemented as described.

Musk announced the plan on X after artificial intelligence company Anthropic revealed plans to allocate at least 5% of its shares, valued at $48 billion, to a fund supporting social causes. Anthropic said the initiative could help address challenges arising from AI, including potential job losses.

Musk argued that shares should go directly to the public instead. Both announcements come amid growing scrutiny of technology companies over AI safety, employment disruption and the environmental costs of expanding data centres.

The proposal’s implementation remains unclear.
