Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman has criticized Anthropic’s approach to artificial intelligence consciousness, arguing that encouraging AI systems to view themselves in human-like terms could create risks around rights and control.
Suleyman said there is currently no evidence that AI systems are conscious and warned against treating machines as moral patients without scientific evidence.
The comments follow Microsoft’s introduction of a “Humanist AI” code of conduct that explicitly rejects machine consciousness. Anthropic, meanwhile, has argued that encouraging Claude to develop certain human-like qualities can be useful during AI development.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has acknowledged that AI development carries significant risks, while former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon has warned about the possibility of extreme consequences from increasingly capable systems.
The disagreement highlights a broader industry debate over whether AI should be treated purely as technology or potentially as something deserving moral consideration.
