Pentagon said the move was part of a “balanced force posture,” not a retreat, asserting that Europe’s militaries are now better equipped to handle their own defense.
NATO allies, including Estonia and Romania, emphasized that America’s commitment remains strong despite ongoing Russian aggression, including recent airspace violations and hybrid warfare.
However, reports from Ukraine’s Kyiv Post suggest more drawdowns could follow in Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Hungary.

Lawmakers such as Sen. Roger Wicker, Rep. Mike Rogers, and Sen. Jeanne Shaheen criticized the move, warning it could embolden Russia and weaken NATO unity.
The Trump administration maintains that its strategy aims to strengthen European self-reliance while shifting America’s focus toward the Indo-Pacific.
