NATO fighter jets have shot down Russian drones over Polish airspace for the first time, after what Warsaw described as an “unprecedented violation” of its territory

Poland said 19 objects entered its airspace during a large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine, with several posing a direct threat.

Fighter jets and air defence systems from Poland and other NATO allies, including the Netherlands, intercepted and destroyed several drones.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that Poland has activated Article Four of NATO’s founding treaty, under which alliance members can call for urgent consultations.

He said the move was necessary to address the escalating risks posed by Russia’s military operations spilling into NATO territory.
