NATO’s top military commander in Europe, Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich, warned Russia on Monday that any attack on alliance territory would trigger a sweeping military response.
Speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum in Poland, Grynkewich said NATO would destroy the forces and systems involved in an attack, making aggression against any member “utterly futile.”
The warning comes amid concerns that Russia could intensify hybrid warfare, including alleged sabotage and cyberattacks, or attempt limited territorial incursions against eastern European NATO members.
NATO’s 2022 Strategic Concept identifies Russia as the alliance’s most significant security threat. Officials have increasingly focused on the possibility of limited military operations against alliance territory, rather than a full-scale invasion, as a potential worst-case scenario.
