Billionaire investor Mark Walter has officially become the majority owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, following unanimous approval from the NBA Board of Governors and the closing of a $10 billion sale.
The purchase from the Buss family marks the highest valuation for an NBA franchise, surpassing the $6.1 billion Boston Celtics sale earlier this year.

Walter, who also owns stakes in the Los Angeles Dodgers, WNBA’s Sparks, and Chelsea F.C., said he aims to uphold the Lakers’ “legacy of excellence.”
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver praised Walter’s leadership and long-standing involvement in professional sports.
Despite selling majority control, Jeanie Buss will retain over 15% ownership and continue as team governor for at least five years.
The Buss family’s nearly five-decade leadership of the Lakers will remain influential in the franchise’s next era of growth and competition.
