The NBA wants access to prediction market data to identify potential insider trading and manipulation, Commissioner Adam Silver told CNBC on Friday.
His comments followed an NFL filing with the Supreme Court supporting New Jersey regulators.
The league argued that sports-related prediction contracts should be treated as gambling rather than financial swaps regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. The NFL also raised concerns about bets involving player injuries and performance.
Silver backed a minimum trading age of 21 but favored federal oversight, citing the complexity of operating under rules across roughly 40 jurisdictions.
The debate comes as NFL prediction market activity increases. Meanwhile, a recent Illinois court ruling temporarily blocked the state from applying its gambling laws to Kalshi and Coinbase event contracts.
