NBC News has laid off around 150 employees, roughly 2 percent of its workforce, ahead of Comcast’s planned spinoff of Versant — the new unit separating MSNBC and CNBC from NBC News.

The layoffs were distributed across departments rather than focused on specific teams, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Sources cited the restructuring and the challenging media economy as key reasons for the move. Once the Versant split takes effect, NBC News will stop providing newsgathering support for CNBC and MSNBC.

Chairman Cesar Conde told staff that NBC News is reallocating resources toward digital growth, including a new subscription platform and expanded sports coverage.

The network is preparing for major events such as the NBA’s return to NBC and the 2026 Milan Olympics. Impacted employees will receive severance, job placement support, and 60 days’ notice.
