NBC News has laid off around 150 employees, roughly 2 percent of its workforce, ahead of Comcast’s planned spinoff of Versant — the new unit separating MSNBC and CNBC from NBC News.
The layoffs were distributed across departments rather than focused on specific teams, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Sources cited the restructuring and the challenging media economy as key reasons for the move. Once the Versant split takes effect, NBC News will stop providing newsgathering support for CNBC and MSNBC.
NBC News plans to lay off about 100 to 150 staffers, affecting between 7% and 8% of NBC News’ employee base.
