Data center development on public lands has become a major point of contention in Nevada’s governor’s race, dividing Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo and Democratic nominee Aaron Ford.

The controversy intensified after the Bureau of Land Management approved the Townsite project. With roughly 80% of Nevada’s land federally owned, some residents say they have been excluded from decisions affecting their communities.

Ford has pledged to pause tax abatements for data centers and pursue legal action, while Lombardo signed an executive order requiring the facilities to contribute more in taxes to support schools.

Environmental advocates, including the Sierra Club, are calling for stricter federal environmental reviews. Meanwhile, the Data Center Coalition says the industry intends to develop responsibly while addressing potential impacts.

The dispute reflects broader concerns about land use, taxation, environmental protection and public participation as Nevada weighs the economic opportunities and costs of expanding data center infrastructure.
