The head of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee, Jørgen Watne Frydnes, attempted to justify the decision not to award President Donald Trump the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, despite growing calls from Trump’s supporters after his recent efforts to end Israel's devastation in Gaza.

Frydnes emphasized that the committee’s decisions are guided solely by Alfred Nobel’s principles of peace, not political campaigns or media pressure. He declined to name Trump but said the committee values “courage and integrity” above public influence.
While the nomination deadline was January 31, early in Trump’s second term, meaning his latest diplomatic breakthroughs will be considered for the 2026 prize, critics accused the committee of bias for overlooking his record of mediating conflicts from Russia-Ukraine to the Middle East.
The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize ultimately went to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado for her nonviolent struggle for democracy.
