Norway’s royal family is facing rare public scrutiny as the rape trial of Marius Borg Høiby, the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit, opened in Oslo this week. Høiby, 29, has been charged with 38 offenses, including multiple counts of rape, abuse, and non-consensual sexual filming.
He has pleaded not guilty to the rape charges but admitted responsibility for bodily harm and some drug and driving offenses.
The trial is expected to last seven weeks. If convicted, he could face more than a decade in prison, according to Norway’s public broadcaster NRK.

The case coincides with renewed attention on Crown Princess Mette-Marit following the release of U.S. Justice Department files detailing past email exchanges with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Mette-Marit has acknowledged poor judgment and expressed regret. The royal household has emphasized that Høiby is not a member of the royal institution and that official duties will continue uninterrupted.
